There are many little bits of information that arise during research that don’t turn up in data searches. Sometimes, information has to be pieced together.
For example, I found an obituary for a John Wilburn Elliott who died in 1965 and was listed as being buried in “Austell City Cemetery.” I could not find any reference to any such named cemetery (until I ask Find a Grave to add it!).
I searched in newspapers for anyone else buried in such a cemetery, and found quite a few. One in particular, John Sewell, led me to discover that “Austell City Cemetery” is now known as “Rose Hill Cemetery” in Austell, Cobb County, Georgia, as found in his obituary and funeral announcement, now on his page.
So, I start a “trivia list” to keep track of these here, with a snippet of how I came to “solve” the trivia puzzle…
- Austell City Cemetery is Rose Hill Cemetery in Austell, Georgia (see above)
- Topo maps in the late 1800s show a town of Randa, Georgia, where the Lumpkin County town of Nimblewill was located later. I can find no further information about Randa, except that is is occasionally mentioned in the Dahlonega Nugget newspaper, such as the home town of H.N. Seabolt and Rev J.K. Bearden.
- Mt. Olive Methodist Church Cemetery in Atlanta was also known as Sandy Creek M.P. Church Cemetery…
- more soon….?
I’m certain that there are better ways to record this information, I can’t always fix every problem… 🙂
